  1. I love this piece. Every time I think about the battle at Thermopylae (often) I get lost in the 300 interpretation where there are millions of soldiers, as opposed to the more realistic number of several hundred thousand. Sure it’s dramatic to make the numbers bigger, but the stakes aren’t any higher. All of those Greek men are going to die. Numbers don’t make drama. The quality and exhibition of the conflict is what makes good drama.

    That’s in addition to the more general, stated purpose of “the abstraction that numbers frequently remain in our perception of reality.”

    I love this piece.
